Overview

Permanent Account Number (PAN) card is a nationalized identity card and it is used to carry out financial transaction. Indian Income Tax Department that allocates this 10-digit alphanumeric (containing both alphabets and numbers) and unique account number issue it to a tax-paying person, company or HUF with lifetime validity.
 
While PAN is a number, PAN Card is a physical card that has your PAN as well as name, date of birth (DoB), and photograph. PAN Card is valid for lifetime because it is unaffected by any change in address. All taxpayers in India, are mandatorily required to furnish their Permanent Account Number (PAN). So, it is compulsory to obtain a PAN card because it should be necessarily quoted in all communications with the Income Tax Department.
 
From 1 January, 2005 it has been made mandatory to quote PAN on challans for any payments due to Income Tax Department. It is also compulsory to quote PAN in all documents pertaining to most financial transactions.
 

How much time it take to get a PAN card?
 
New PAN card takes approx 15 to 20 working days. Correction or Replacement can take somwhere from 30- 40 working days, however this may vary depending on the authorities discretion and load.

How to Apply for PAN

Application for PAN card can be submitted either online or offline.
 
Offline PAN Application:
 
Step 1: Download a copy of a PAN Card form, from the NSDL or UTIITSL website or click here to download. The same can also be collected from UTIITSL agents.
Step 2: The applicant needs to fill this form and submit the relevant documents to the NSDL office along with a processing fee.
Step 3: The PAN card will be delivered to the address mentioned in the application within 15 working days.
 
Online PAN Application:
 
Step 1: Visit the NSDl or UTIITSL website for PAN application online.
Step 2: Click on “New PAN”
Step 3: Individuals need to fill in PAN form 49A.
Step 4: The applicant needs to deposit a processing fee.
Step 5: The final page will be generated after the payment, and this will consist of a 15-digit acknowledgement no.
Step 6: The acknowledgement form shall be sent to NSDL online along with all relevant documents.
Step 7: Post verification of application & documents, physical card to be dispatched within 15 working days.

Structure of a PAN Number

 For example, “P” represents an Individual, “F” represents a firm.

 Initial letter of the PAN holder’s last name

Types of PAN Card

1. PAN Card for Indian Individuals: Can be applied through form 49A by any resident of Indian including students and minors.

2. PAN Card for Non-Resident Individuals: They too have to submit the form 49A and can be eligible to apply for the same if they pay taxes in India.

3. PAN Card for foreign entities paying tax in India: Any company registered outside India but pays taxes in India can avail a PAN Card by filling form 49AA.

4. PAN Card for OCI and NRE:  Overseas Citizens of India and Non Resident Entities can also apply for a PAN Card through form 49AA

5. PAN Card for Indian Companies: Firms and companies can also apply for a PAN Card for tax-related transactions.

PAN Card Eligibility

Under section 139A of the Income Tax Act, the following taxpaying entities are required to have a Permanent Account Number (PAN):
 
a. Any person who has paid tax or is liable to pay tax to the Income Tax Department. All this is decided based on the tax slabs.
b. Any person who is carrying out a business or professional practice, which earns him a yearly turnover of more than Rs.5 lakh in any year of assessment.
c. Importers and exporters who are liable to pay any form of tax or duty charges as per the Income Tax Act or as per any prevalent law
d. All kinds of trusts, charitable organisations, and associations.
 
All tax paying entities such as minors, individuals, HUFs, partnerships, companies, body of individuals, trusts, and others, should apply for PAN.

2. Documents Required for applying PAN Application by Companies / Partnerships/ LLPs/ Trust/ AOPs

NRIs Individuals applicants are required to submit following documents for applying for a PAN card:

a. Overseas address proof
b. Copy of Passport
c. Passport size photographs -2
d. Copy of overseas bank statement
 
4. PAN Card Documents Required for HUFs and Individuals (Not Being Citizens of India)
Individuals and HUFs who are not citizens of India require (i) Proof of Identity and (ii) Address Proof for applying for a PAN card. Following is list of documents can be submitted under each category:
 
Proof of Identity:
a. Passport
b. Overseas Citizen of India card, allotted by Government of India
c. Person of Indian Origin card allotted by the Government of India
d. Any other Citizenship ID Number, National ID Number, Taxpayer ID Number
 
Proof of Address:
a. Passport
b. Person of Indian Origin card
c. Overseas Citizen of India card
d. Bank account statements from the country where the individual resides
e. Registration certificate issued by Office of Foreigner’s Registration and reflects Indian address
 
5. Documents Required for PAN Application by Assesses other than Individuals

Assesses other than individuals require Proof of Identity and Proof of address for applying a PAN card.

Proof of Identity:
a. Duly attested company registration certificate issued in the country where the applicant resides.
b. Copy of Registration certificate issued in India.
 
Proof of Address:
a. Duly attested Certificate of Registration issued in the country of residence of the applicant.
b. Copy of Registration certificate issued in India.
